The problem with shortening gun season is hunters in certain parts of the state are going to get robbed of hunting the rut with a gun. A lot of you guys are nearing the prime rut in your area. My area hasn't even really hit the pre rut yet. Up until last week we were still seeing bachelor groups. I would personally love to see a shortened gun season as I tote a bow a large part of the season anyway, but many hunters in my area would be really upset.

How about skipping all of this "poor bow hunter" drivel and shorten the bow season. If you want a shorter season then this is the perfect place to take it away. Bow hunters and small game hunters can hunt during rifle season, so the only logical explanation to this is that people want to increase trophy regulations or have the state pander to their special interest group and limit others' opportunities all so that they can have it easier and/or feel special. Condensed gun seasons lead to a LOT of pressure and less selectivity in a very short window, and can be very difficult for people with busy lives and work schedules. But, hey, it's worth the sacrifice for bigger bucks, right?

I'm all for leaving it alone too, I just get tired of hearing people ask what they can take away from someone else in order to make their own life better. Sounds kinda like a political ideology, doesn't it?

The original layout I mentioned only took away the option to carry a gun during the rut. It still gave you 2 full months of being part of the orange army. Putting bow season during the rut will lead to bigger bucks to an extent , but it is mostly allowing more bucks to breed.
Poor bowhunter? From what Ive seen on the leases I've hunted on in the state it's more like, oh poor gun hunter doesn't want to put in the time and effort to find and pattern deer and needs the luck of the rut to kill a buck.

For the sake of discussion, and since so many people seem to be still salty about losing a buck tag, how would you feel about going back to a statewide 3 buck limit with drastic changes to the seasons.
Something simple like, Oct 1-31- Muzzleloader, Nov 1-30- archery, December 1-31-rifle. Sprinkle a few juvenile weekends in there and call it a day.

Are you suggestions scheduling muzzleloader season before archery?
He just wants to hunt the rut with a bow and keep all the rifles out. LOL

Season seems pretty good right now...

I'd like to see some reduction in doe limits, perhaps go to 1 a day in unit L, and definetly would like to allow kids to use weapon of choice like Mississippi does for kids. My 14 year old girl is scared of the muzzleloader, and my 9 y/o girl definetly isn't ready for it, so they miss out on the very best hunting on my farms in mid November :(

I had a good friend with the same problem with his grandson
I got him to use 2-30 gran pelts and limit shots to 40-50 yards, it worked great

recoil and muzzle blast would be fine, but the 9y/o has a nasty habit of trying to put the stock UNDER her armpit when looking through the scope on rifles that don't fit her. At that age, if she gets 'scope-bit', she may not shoot for a few years. I built her 300 blackout with a 11in LOP, so it fits even very young children well.

Leave it like it is.
Seems like all most everyone is happy with the way it is.

Leave it the way it is. Two bucks is fine and the seasons are fine. Trophy hunters can get their horns. Meat hunters can still shoot plenty of does around their holiday schedules. Folks who are too busy to be hardcore hunters but still enjoy what little time they get in the woods aren't run away from the sport by taking away their rifles. There are absolutely ways that we could change it to improve one type of hunter's experience, but it will certainly be at the expense of another type of hunter.

Anyway, based on the number of dead deer I see on the side of the road here in Williamson County, there are still plenty of deer out there for the taking. Go enjoy our great state and the plentiful hunting it has to offer.

I disagree 100% with this option

I just want more quality public land, that would help more people than any type of season change.

I hear you, and that's a very good point. For example, public land hunting opportunity in the geographically massive state of TX really isn't noteworthy. In fact, I would say it's downright sorry. The state is reportedly 95%+ privately owned, and it shows. That said, I've recently discovered the gem that is Oklahoma public hand. Less than 2 hrs drive from my primary residence in TX and a $280 nonresident archery license and I've got months of deer hunting access on thousands of acres of quality public land with camp sites and in some cases, well water. TN has a very good public land scene, too. There is a lot of opportunity for ambitious public land hunters who can make time to scout and hunt. More public land would be even better.

I like the seasons just the way it is but I do wish they would go back to 3 buck. I hear people saying if you want to kill 2 small bucks and be done go ahead but if you want to keep hunting save a tag. You could say the same thing with people who want the 2 buck limit, if you don't want to kill more than 2 ,then don't but don't take it away from others just because you don't want more than 2 killed. If our deer population had been declining I would have been all for it. but we all know that had noting to do with it. I killed two of my biggest bucks last year during muzzle loader and didn't get to gun hunt, even though I had done bought my license. Before you say I should have let one walk, I have for a long time now let small bucks walk but never would I put down someone else for killing one and letting them walk was my choice not someone else trying to make that decision for me. I very seldom kill 3 bucks in a year because I always save 1 tag incase I saw a big one but I have killed two quite often.

Stay with 2 bucks only. Should be a size limit though . Lots of small bucks that ND a chance to mature

LMAO, you do know this is EXACTLY what happened when it got changed from 3 to 2 right??? Taking from many to appease a few with no valid reasons!
Nothing has been broken for several years now and we didn't need a change in the buck limits, comical how those that were pushing for the change say now "nothing broke don't fix it" LOL nothing has been broken for many years now, steady improvements along the way.
Politics has NO business in the setting of seasons or bag limits!
