Recoil Energy
270 150g 16#
308 150g 14#
30-06 150g 18#

Short actions RULE!

kinda hard to believe that cause you have to factor the weight of the rifle assuming they are they exact same rifle in weight then using remington factory ammo the 270 and 06 have almost the same mel vel so the felt recoil should be the same

but motor oil is motor oil none of them are that bad

here is the deal

06 vs 308

same bullet .308 diameter
short action vs long action

up to 150 gn bullets the short action smaller case will run with the o6 but moving up towards the 180 gn bullet the o6 will have an edge

the 270 is a .277 bullet in the o6 case

now u need to think 7/08

7mm .284 bullet in the 308 case :d
Now your cooking with gas there DA......

Obviously the 7mm08.....best of both military worlds! LOL

It's all in the BC! Baby!

All 3 calibers are good. Pick the one you are most comfortable with because that will improve your accuracy. If you put the bullet in the right place each of these calibers will kill it where it stands.

.30 06'...it killed alot of Japs and Krauts, but the .308 has killed some Hajis!

.308

I have 308, 30-06, & 300 win mag.

For deer size game and smaller go with the 308. If I had to pick one it would be 30-06.

I love my 300 win mag but you have to be able to handle recoil. It is a flat shooting big bullet gun. I get great results with 180 grain bullets. I would shoot up to Moose size game.

The 30-06 is a great round up to Elk size game.

I like the .308 because I hunt with an AR-10. Doubles as Zombie killer. Military ammo readily available.

All 3 calibers are good. Some good advice pick the one you are most comfortable with and the one you can get the best deal on because that will improve your accuracy without hurting your pocketbook . I have a M1A1 in 308 that I put a good 3X9 scope on I have hunted with and it and my Remington 700 ADL both are accurate rifles.

I think a short barrel under 20" or Carbine type rifle the 308 would be a better choice other than that 3006,nothing wrong with any mentioned

alright fellas one more question to get some opinions on, I've narrowed my choices down to 2 rifles the marlin xl7 (xs7) or the weatherby vanguard? Weatherby is only about 100 more. My research has me pointing towards the weatherby, just wanted to hear from some people that know more about it then me. thanks

Try them both out. Shoulder the rifle and look down the barrel and see which one feels better to you. The one that feels the best to you is the one you should get. They are both good rifles.

I personally have the 308 in a Browning synthetic a-bolt. When I want to go hunting I'll go rain or shine. I just feel like the synthetic is better for me. Let me also ad that I had a remington 760 before this a-bolt and the stock actually warped from hunting in adverse conditions. I put a synthetic on it before I sold it.

I'm a short barrel fan. Therefore, .308 or .30-06 would get the nod. I have a Winchester Classic Stainless .270 with a 24" barrel and I just plain hate it. It's akin to swinging a railroad tie when in a blind.

So basically the 7mm-08 will have the same felt recoil as a .308 but is also more aerodynamic and will provided better accuracy.

The .308 is a short .30-06 and is only 100-150fps slower depending on the load. Ive had both and wouldnt complain if either caliber was the last gun Id ever buy. Both are very accurate with mild recoil and if your kids wanted to hunt with either, then the recoil wouldnt be too harsh.

Now your going to throw gas on a fire! Probably theoretically speaking....YES, but probably not that big of a difference to bambi. I personally don't have enough experience or knowledge to say if a 7mm bullet is absolutely better than a .30 cal. , but if you compare ballistic coefficient data then yes. So short answer. Same recoil, but better long range accuracy based on the BC. Higher the number, less air resistance at longer ranges. The way I understand it at least.

"Same Recoil" is theoretical, and it's not exactly the same unless it's in two rifles with exactly the same stock shape, the same weight, and shooting bullets of the same weight and velocity.

The '06 shoots the same weight bullet slightly faster, so it has slightly harder kick. You may not notice the increased kick except after a long day at the range.

The thing with the 7mm-08 is that you shoot slightly smaller, lighter bullets and get the same results. So the kick is less, the trajectory is flatter, and the bullets are less expensive (if you load your own, because the 308 family case takes less powder.)

I'd recommend the Marlin in a 7mm-08. If they make it in 260 REM that's even better, but you probably would have to reload to keep in supply of inexpensive ammo. The cost saving of the Marlin over the Vangard is enough to buy practically all the reloading equipment you need. You can load a box of 308 family shells for about half the cost of factory loads.
