Well i don't know much about guns but slowing trying to learn and purchase my first deer rifle. I've seen many debates over the 270 and 3006, but have never really seen the 308 discussed in these. Now i'm not asking which one you'd prefer because from what i've looked at on the site I'd pretty much be told to close my eyes and pick, but what about the 308, pros, cons? thanks

the 308 is a short action therefore can be found in lighter rifles. it also has a reputation for accuracy. having all 3 calibers in the family, the deer can't tell the difference :D

I also have had all three, and if I had to go to just one, it would be the .308, I just like the .308 all around.

I don't hunt out west, most shots 200yds or less, (though it would shoot much more).

Seems to do everything I need it to do and alot more pleasant to shoot than the other two I owned.

One pro about the .308 is if you decide you want to change your caliber to a .243 or 7mm08 you just have to change the barrel on the gun.

The same could be said about the 30-06 family as well

6mm-06
25-06
6.5-06
270
280
8mm-06
338-06
35 Whelen

Personally I like a short action rifle, and the 308 is plenty for deer out to any sane distance. For a deer rifle I think a 308 or one of its spawn are hard to beat.

you drive a chevy buy a 30/06
you drive a ford buy a .270
you drive a Mopar get a .308

hey like others have said all good deer poison

my preference for the .308, I like short cases, short actions, short carbine barrels and no sacrifice has to be made of anything the other two may do for their own fans.

I reload and the .308 is friendly to me. Them big arse long cases have been finicky on paper for me at times.

Long actions are difficult to scope if you have eye relief problems with you or your scope preference.

.308 IMO. It is far more pleasing to shoot on a range. Less recoil, so you are more apted to be a little more accurate with that round than anticipating the recoil as you get ready to pull the trigger. Therefore your only thought is the intended target and not your shoulder getting ready to get snapped off.

Recoil Energy
270 150g 16#
308 150g 14#
30-06 150g 18#

Ballistics are all about the same at 200 yards and under. It's the accuracy that counts, and it is partially due to the above numbers.

Short actions RULE!

I agree with everybody on this one.

I've had all 3 and really like the .308. I'm bad about flinching when I shoot so I like to stay away from the harder hitting stuff.

here is the deal

06 vs 308

same bullet .308 diameter
short action vs long action

up to 150 gn bullets the short action smaller case will run with the o6 but moving up towards the 180 gn bullet the o6 will have an edge

the 270 is a .277 bullet in the o6 case

now u need to think 7/08

7mm .284 bullet in the 308 case :d
Now your cooking with gas there DA......

Obviously the 7mm08.....best of both military worlds! LOL

It's all in the BC! Baby!
270..150g. Core Lock 0.26
308 150g Core Lock 0.31
30-06 150g Core Lock 0.31
7mm-08 140 Core Lock 0.39

Seriously MidTN....get the .308....The rest of this is just a bunch of jibber jabber that a dead deer doesn't really appreciate at all, just to techno freaks that surf this site! HA!

All 3 calibers are good. Pick the one you are most comfortable with because that will improve your accuracy. If you put the bullet in the right place each of these calibers will kill it where it stands.

.308

I have 308, 30-06, & 300 win mag.

For deer size game and smaller go with the 308. If I had to pick one it would be 30-06.

I love my 300 win mag but you have to be able to handle recoil. It is a flat shooting big bullet gun. I get great results with 180 grain bullets. I would shoot up to Moose size game.

The 30-06 is a great round up to Elk size game.

I like the .308 because I hunt with an AR-10. Doubles as Zombie killer. Military ammo readily available.
