One of the local gun shops has quite a few in stock, I assume you'd need a tax stamp first.
Wouldn't that be the preferred route, since it's local and all?

You would buy the suppressor first. Then submit the stamp pmt along with the paperwork for approval.

IF I could ever afford one, I'd likely go thru my local range to get it. That way you can have "conjugal" visits with it until the stamp arrives.

I was out over $4K and had to wait 13 months for my first 3 NFA toys. I could have gone down and shot them but it was an hour drive and I chose not to. That was several years ago and there are dealers a lot closer to home now but I'm out of the game.

Being nosy here, what 3 did you go with the first time out ? I'm "RIGHT THERE" on saying F it and taking the plunge in similar fashion

A MAC10 45ACP submachinegun, a GemTech 45 Viper suppressor for it and a Tactical Innovations Quest.22 rimfire suppressor.

The Powder Springs Ingram sub gun has tripled in price since I bought it. I wish I could have afforded a dozen back then.

Recent Form 4s have been approved around a month. Now is the time.

Individuals seem to get approved fast, but not trusts for what I've seen.

What about the rimfire threads for the cans that use an o-ring? How much of a gap do you need for the o-ring, and where does it sit?

And if "competent machinists" cut shoulder reliefs correctly, then why do so many people have to use beveled spacers, or should?

If all the machinists were competent, then why do so many suppressor companies make user replaceable threaded end caps?

There are very good reasons that there are shops that only cut barrel threads.

Competent people will only do that if there is an option to do it. They won't just do it knowing it is wrong. It's not even like anyone needs to do something that hasn't been done. If there is a question, just repeat what the manufacture did. A competent machinist will not do something they aren't able to do and what you experienced has 2 things doing the tango, the machinist and the can manufacture. These days I wouldn't blindly trust the manufacture. People buy and use tree stands right out of the box. They believe it's safe because they are told they are. When I looked into the engineering of them I found they don't use the rule that's been time tested, the rule of 3. If a failure occurs at 300 pounds it's rated safe at 100 pounds. Stands use 2, if it fails at 300, it's rated at 150. It's why so many fail. I never use one out of the box, always add support. Many stands are rated at 300, means it failed at 600, not 900. It's easy to apply 600 pounds of stress because the weight isn't always static. Never looked into cans, but if so many fail... A commercial ladder is rated at 300, does use the rule of 3 and you can tell... most don't know what's being rated, it isn't the ladder, it's each rung.

I don't thread barrels, but I am hired to do similar things for home owners, they tell me what they want, I tell them what it takes. I do listen if they suggest other ways to accomplish it and if it's possible I give them what they want, but my experience (competence) typically will give them information they were unaware of.

A competent machinist stands behind their work and they have the insurance to prove it.

I have had a huge beef with "Pro Shops" mostly archery, nothing professional about everyone I've ever been in. Had a bearing go bad on a cam, went to the "Pro Shop" the manufacture required. When I mentioned the issue he said he doubted it was bad and even if it was it won't effect anything. I was shocked... while he was holding the cam I said, spin it, he hadn't even spun the cam before opening his cake hole. It was obvious it was bad and he went to get a replacement showing up with the wrong one. Long story short I left with the right one.

What you describe as a reflection of competence is just incompetence.

Got one in jail now (silencerco hybrid 46) . Got a great deal on it @Whmc in Humblodt Tn . Did all the paperwork,finger prints and photos right there . Been seeing a real fast approval's online ! Submitted on 3/15 and waiting for an approval from ATF !

Thankfully I have zero desire to own a suppressor.

Edit: That not really honest, so let me rephrase that… Thankfully I have zero desire to pay the government and the suppressor retailers the ridiculous prices they are charging for something simply because the government regulates it.

If legislation ever passes to remove suppressors from any government regulation (highly unlikely) the price will drop to where it should be and I will get in the game then.

I have two in jail right now too. It's only been something like 17 days, but I can still hope that they will be approved pretty soon.

Just bought my first one on Monday. Silencer Co Sparrow. Bought it at a LGS that had a silencer shop kiosk. Bought it mainly for my tx22 but I'll also get a threader barrel for my 10/22. And who knows what else in the future.

The Sparrow was cheaper (relatively speaking) and seems to be the simplest to clean. I also couldn't find one in stock online anywhere so I got extra motivated when I saw they had one in stock. I don't think this is the best performing by a long shot, but I just got it for fun. I had seen where wait times were drastically reduced so I thought I'd dip my toes with this one.

Set up a Silencer Shop profile over the weekend and added my photo. Did the prints on their kiosk Monday when I bought it. Seemed simple enough, guy working there walked me through it. I didn't realize it at the time, but something must have auto populated when I created my account and it was showing my street address as my county. Silencer Shop emailed me this morning and I logged on and fixed that. Think I am waiting on a Docusign document to sign now and then it'll all get submitted.

I just did an individual not a trust, mainly due to that being the fastest approval. If I ever get deep into this world I may go set up a trust but nobody is going to be shooting this without me so I didn't think it's be an issue.

Should also add the first step I did was create an atf account so I could submit the eform4 via Silencer Shop. Got to do that step first if you want to file digitally and take advantage of the quicker turn around time.

I did a trust on both of mine but I'm the only one on it. Just what both companies recommended I do. I'm still not sure I understand what the benefit to a trust is if I'm the only one on it?

Lgs had a efiled form 4 approved in 28 minutes and several in 3 days . Buy em now before the atf decides to halt efile again.
