Very interesting! Do you have thoughts on why?

My simple guess is because they lose their nose advantage. That could be related to beds, scrapes, common doe areas, or food sources.

A lot of buck beds I've found in post season scouting were not necessarily the safest or most secluded spots. Most generally they're positioned to monitor doe activity and travel. Or at least that's the only sense I could make of them. So when I noticed my daylight buck pics were during wind direction change, it made sense that they would have to reposition if indeed they were holing up in spots that allowed them to keep close eye/nose on the girls. I might be way off base on that but it's the only guess I've got so far.

In West TN, older bucks are splitting out of their bachelor groups. Night time activity only. Getting closer to daylight movement. No scrapes yet. Weather is still warm. Very few acorns. Very dry and beans are harvested. Not much to eat. Appears to be a better than last season of 3.5 year olds but no older bucks so far on camera. CWD taking a toll on older bucks.

What are you seeing where you are.

About 30 minute north of Jackson, been watching a 2.5 year old 8 guarding a couple does all morning, since before light. He still has them hemmed up now. Buck had been extremely vocal. Grunting low tending grunts and a few growls or maybe roars while a bit of chasing took place. Watched two 1.5 year olds spar at the other end of my field. They hit scrapes after they quit pushing each other around.
I'm also about 30 minutes north of Jackson. (Cades area). Little bucks have been sparring the last few days and checking does but no real interest that I've seen yet. No scrapes Monday, but yesterday they were everywhere. It's about to get hot.

Rutherford county this morning. These two were in the food plot at daybreak. He's chased her into the thickets on either side all morning. She'll pop out every 30 minutes or so and he's right behind her. Bono's showed me her tarsals are rusty with a little black starting to show. His look normal but I don't think that matters. She is really small like fawn small so kinda shocked she's getting close to going in.

Hadn't seen a scrape or horn tree this year.
Have seen 4 bucks (2 year old or younger) necks aren't swollen and don't seem aggressive to each other. Rut running late here in East TN. Normally this is the week.

We did not see a ton of sign last week at LBL juvenile on KY side. Saturday weather was hot, super gusty, and storming in the morning. No movement Saturday evening.

We did have a chance at a nice 8 point that came in following 3 does on Sunday at 8:30, but he did not hang around very long and he slowly got away over the rise before son could find him again. We got in and gave FTC a try later in day and no movement.

I expect the colder weather this weekend will produce a lot of overall deer movement....at least that is our hope. My son and I are committed to two full days in the woods until he tags.

This time last year, I had lots of activity in Lawrence county on cameras. Not so much this year and may not since i moved cameras.

Always thought the amount of daylight triggered the rut, but this year wouldn't make you think so. Spent last weekend on a doe only permit at Oak Ridge. Only saw two bucks.
Did not see any sign the rut was on.
