I think .243 is awesome and it kills deer just as quick and dead as my .30-06 from what I've seen over the past 25 years. Not enough difference to notice on Southern whitetails. I'd want something bigger for western mulies or elk, but .243 is ideal for TN and AL where I mostly hunt.

for draggin it through the woods i would really like a remington model 7 in .243 or 7mm-08. The model 7 is a compact rifle my wife has a .260 model 7 that is a very nice.

On the budget side stevens is made by savage. it has the same barrel and action as a savage, also parts interchange between the 2 makes. I would put the accuracy of the stevens up against the rem model 7 or 700 anyday.
from what i've played with i would not go any cheaper than the stevens.

I purchased the Mossberg super bantam 243 for my son a month ago.It was a selective choice and a good one. It is so light my 7 yr old can hold it well. The trigger is great as well. He loves it and it shoots good. I shot it and fell for it. I like the cun the action is good, accurate and a goog gun. I am getting a 270!! Good bang for the buck.

I would check out the new savage edge!
I have a savage model 10 in 243 and I think its the best deer rifle out there!

son has the model 10 in 7mm-08 and is hands down much better than a 243.

Went with the Savage Edge. Just picked it up a few minutes ago. I will let you know in a few days if I am happy with my decision.

But what makes it so much better?
I hear that all the time that 7mm-08 is better than 243.
Every deer that I have shot with 243 besides one has hit the dirt where he was standing.
I am not bashing the round I would just like to know why people think its so much better.

7-08 has heavier grain bullets to pick from compared to the .243

I like em both about the same, but I would pick the 08 over the .243 for that reason.

Same case, the advantage of the 08 is simply versatility. Instead of a 100 gr bullet weight max you can go all the way up to 175 gr.
