I know some of it is because of the larger bullet selection but for deer I don't see why you need a 150 grain bullet.
people kill deer all the time with 223 and 22-250?
I guess it is all in what you like. heck I might own a 7mm-08 one day and see the difference! :D

It funny how every time there is a 243 thread it always turns into a pissing match between a 7mm-08 and a 243. The 243 will kill a deer just as fast and just as good as a 7mm-08. A poorly placed shot from a 7mm-08 will not do any better than a poorly placed shot from a 243.

Yep! It doesn't matter what caliber you are using it all comes back to shot placement!

i couldn't disagree more.
a marginal hit with a 140 gr. 7mm bullet is much more likely to lead to a recovered animal than a marginal hit with a 100 gr. 243 bullet.

Enlighten us with an explanation of your theory.

Well, shot the new gun yesterday and aside from the 5o lb trigger pull, I am satisfied for the money I spent. I wish I would have went with the youth model though, did not realize the stock was as long as it is. Can a differnet stock be purchased for the Savage Edge (youth stock)?

A marginal hit is a marginal hit, no matter what you shoot it with. A 243 or a 338, you didnt do your job.

true, but you are much more likely to have a marginal hit with an inexperienced youth shooter. a little more lead can be the difference in a recovery and a lost, wounded animal.

An inexperienced youth shooter is much more likely to be more accurate with a quiet, low recoilng .243. Using a harder kicking round will make them flinch just enough to get a marginal shot and cause a lost, wounded animal.

I use my .30-06 sometimes just to get it out of the safe and I don't see a dime's worth of difference in the way deer react to being hit with an 85 grain .243 or a 168 grain .30-06. If anything, the .243 drops them a little faster, don't know why. Both of them are more than enough to drop one of these southern whitetails.

Some good info here:

Spend a little more time at the range and your marginal hits may improve. According to your thinking,If you get a big enough caliber you don't need to practice with it.

you misinterpreted entirely. INEXPERIENCED shooters are more likely to make marginal hits. range time does nothing to prepare for the adrenalin rush of their 1st shot at an animal. the 243 is a fine round for deer for EXPERIENCED shooters.
