Late last spring I drilled soybeans into a very nice but ripe stand of cereal rye. The drill matted a lot of the rye down, the beans came up and were never allowed to canopy. They were browsed without mercy. Of course without canopy some weeds came in but so did the cereal rye so I didn't spray. Now I have not seen this before as usually I crimp rye before it ripens or it does not germinate due to warm temps and it is a cool season grass. Fast forward to today, mowing a few trashy plots and came to this one plot with a beautiful stand of cereal rye about 8 to 10 inches tall. Big win? Or big flop? Will it tiller this winter? Will it head next spring?
This is not fall planted rye! It has been up since late may!
