On your tomato plants as far as insecticides? My Dad covered everything in SEVEN dust but I credit this to my bad looks! Is SEVEN dust OK or what would you recommend?

Thanks

I used malathion up to about two weeks prior to harvest, never closer than that.

I know I have tried a lot of home remedies and none work very well or last long enough to make the effort worth while.

70% neem oil or AzaMax which is the concentrated ingredient in Neem oil.

Neem oil is basically harmless to humans and most beneficial insects. It will kill bugs though that eat your plants.

+1, except for hornrooms as you will need to keep picked off of you see any damage, peppers as well. neem is also an antifungal agent.

lay off the synthetic fertilizers and it will help with the bad bugs as well.

Eliminates
Caterpillars & worms (including armyworms, bagworms, cabbage loopers, cabbage worms, Codling moth, cross-striped, diamond back moth larvae, eastern tent, fireworms, forest tent, gypsy moth, hornworms, imported cabbageworm, leaftiers, leaf rollers, Naval orange worm, sod webworm, tent caterpillars

From what ive seen if it eats your plants then Neem will cause it to stop feeding and die. I think its Dyna Gro that has a neem oil product that is higher than 70% neem oil but you will probably need to add an emulsifier like a few drops of dish soap.

Monterey has a fruit tree product with 70% neem and 0.25% pyrethrin if you want to bump it up a notch.

it wont kill all of them. same for squash bugs. you still have to monitor for pests. neem oil is not a spray once and forget or start spraying when you see pests. if you do that you will be thoroughly disappointed.

you have to spray neem once per 7-10 days for it to be effective BUT it will not kill 100%. it only reduces occurences.

another pest that it has little effect on is oriental fruit moths on peaches and jap beetles on okra. i lost a whole crop of peaches by spraying neem oil only one year. now, im back to spraying sevin on my peaches.

as far as Sevin safety, my grandmothers used it a whole lot and both lived to be 100. i just dont use it as much and never on blooms.

We try to avoid any pesticides in the garden, I've never had problems with bugs on the plants. Except for Potatoes, and sevin doesn't kill potato bugs.

What kind of bugs are on your tomato plants?

You are one lucky gardener! We have to monitor our fruit trees and plants on a daily basis this time of year due to Japenese beetles.

Nothing yet. Last year hornworms destroyed my tomatoes. I sprayed my tomatoes with a little white vinegar and sprinkled cayenne pepper on the plants. I got the idea from where else...YouTube. So far so good and the plants seem ok.

diatomaceous earth is supposed to be heck on caterpillars.

Up until you give it a good watering then its almost worthless. During the summer i need to water almost daily and in fabric pots it is pretty much daily when its over 90F.
