Remington 700 SPS Buckmaster

Got a buddy that's just getting into deer hunting and he's looking at a Remington 700 SPS Buckmaster in 30-06. It's a blued barrel with Mossy Oak camo synthetic stock and comes with a Nikon Prostaff 3x9x40. He's found one new on sale with rebate for $649. I don't know anything about this gun so is this a good gun and a good price?

I still can't believe the crazy stuff Remington has done in the past couple of years... a glorified 700 blued synthetic for $649????

Or their XCR, a glorified s/s BDL with a fancy coating for $850???

Honestly, I'd look hard for a used pre j-lock rifle... shouldn't be hard to find in 30-06 for $400. Heck, I'll see used synthetic ADL's sell for $275!!!

He also found a used Browning A-bolt for $400 somewhere in Alabama. Opinions on one vs. the other?

Gravey the J lock is a lock on the bolt that the factory installed from the late 90's til about 2005. When someone says pre J lock he means a used rifle built before the late 90's.

To be honest your friend could do a lot better by searching the internet.

Remingtons are good guns, but I agree that those prices are too much to pay. If you search the used market, you can get a quality bolt gun for $400 or less.

Thanks for all the feedback. He ended up biting the bullet and bought a Remington 700 CDL 30-06 that has a wood stock and stainless steel fluted barrel.

I think he got it at your favorite place -- Franklin Gun Shop. He's supposed to stop by the office on his way back home and show it to me. It sure sounds nice.

Well he brought it by and that is one fine piece of craftmanship. I put it to my shoulder and it was very well balanced. Saying it's nice is an understatement.

Any remington is a good gun. The buckmaster edition looks like arse but Im sure it shoots as good as the rest if you find what the gun likes to shoot.
