My son has a DPMS Panther 5.56 rifle with open sights. He wants some sort of scope or electronic sight. Guys, please recommend something that's decent but doesn't break the bank. He doesn't want a long scope but something like a red dot. Thanx.

$200-$300? I thought a Burris sight might be good?

Ok good I will make some recommendations. I just did not want to write up something for you then someone come in and re come d some $70 POS and then you go oh goodie that's the one I will get.

I see way too much of that on these forums.

The crossfire II from vortex brings in the best of both worlds. 1x4 optics gives you all the advantages of a red dot plus the magnification of a 4x power optic. Not the clearest Scope I have ever owned but it's a damn site better than a Bushnell or Tasco.

I'm not a fan of Bushnell optics but this one has a lot going for it, since it's going on a .223 recoil is not going to punish it too bad. Specs are similar to the Vortex

As far as red dots goes the Burris Fastfire is going to be hard to beat in your price range. Not quite as sleek or fancy as its Leupold counter part but it's a solid rugged optic.

Stay away from all the off brand red dot scopes. No matter how great of a review you hear. The returns are massive on them and they will fail on you in short order. Buy right the first time ..get the best warranty you can and be done with it,

Dude, that's very helpful. Can you give me some other "toys" he might want to put on his rifle? I know virtually nothing about AR's/M-4s. He has the Panther rifle, a crap load of ammo and a case.

There is all sorts of useful and wasteful crap you can bolt onto a ar15 .

Here is a short list of so,e of the more practical things you should be looking at

http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/bo ... 78003.aspx

http://www.brownells.com/shooting-acces ... 21245.aspx

http://www.brownells.com/shooting-acces ... 27553.aspx

http://www.brownells.com/magazines/rifl ... 75488.aspx

http://www.brownells.com/shooting-acces ... 25138.aspx

Load up on 20 round Pmags. I much prefer 20 round mags over 30 rounds for most civilian applications, easier to get in prone. Easier to get on the bench . For civilian clothes carrying in BDU pockets they fit better and don't stick out ,print as bad and weigh down BDU pockets as bad. With a long coat on and a 16 inch barrel a man could move around somewhat freely should a Y2k or riot situation rise it's ugly head. People with average size hands or small hands can manipulate them better too! So load up!

Some of the key things you need in a fighting rifle are

1. Good sights.
2. Good mags
3. Good ammo
4. Sling
4.5 collapse stock
Next in lower priority
5.Extended charging handle
6. Flashlight
7. On board magazine pouch or mag clip
8. Free float tube/tri rail

Pretty much anything else and your just adding on extra weight and bulk just to be adding on . Add enough on and you can get invited into the mall ninja hall of fame,

Personally if I were setting one up today I would be breaking the bank looking at the Leupold https://www.leupold.com/hunting-shootin ... ng-1x14mm/

Or possibly one of the Trijicon Acog

When he called tonight, the Leupold is the scope I suggested, thinking he was going to buy it himself. He's a clinical pharmacist at St Jude here in Memphis. Then he said that's what he wanted from me for Christmas, thus the lower budget amount! :bash:

Leupold makes a 1x4 scope called the VXR Hogg. It's $500 and has a illuminated reticicle, it would be awesome on that platform as well.

Good example of why I usually don't spend a great deal of time on these threads giving advice on optics . I will go to a long lengths to research and give my advice on quality optics only to have someone come in with some sub quality optic that appears attractive in price and everyone starts salivating over it.

It seems like the original OP is a little bit better versed in optics that to go for something like that. At least I hope he is .

Sorry for the misunderstanding I was thinking that the op asked for suggestions for something to put on his ar that was decent and didn't break the bank. So I posted the one that I have and have currently used for two years with no problem. Didn't realize that a newer American company with a lifetime warranty and a good price was not possibly something worth looking into. Again sorry for offering a suggestion when I am not an expert in optics. Some of us can't afford to spend thousands on optics
