the Hornbeak buck . . . sure looks like a 3 1/2-yr-old or younger buck
Curious. On what do you base that assessment?
Keep in mind I didn't say what age he was, just that he "looks" 3 1/2 or younger to me.
I've seen and aged a lot of deer, and there are body profiles (as well as antler characteristics) that are more often than not "characteristic" of younger vs older age classes.
Mainly based on the pic with the bow laying across the deer, albeit not a whole lot to go by, the buck looks "younger". That does not appear to be the body of a 4 1/2 or older buck, but does "look" 3 1/2 or younger. Again, it's just a single pic, and single pics can be misleading.
Also, there's an antler characteristic more common than not on mature bucks called "mass". This particular buck's antlers have a lot of tines, tine length, and "score", but not the "mass" more commonly seen on older bucks. But then, not all older bucks have mass either. But combining that single pic and the character of those antlers, this buck "looks" like a 3 1/2 or younger buck with great genetics.
