Sighting in TSS

I recently got a 20 gauge and put a Burris ff3 on it. Didn't want to hijack the other thread talking about the best 20 loads for turkey.

Without blowing through the high dollar TSS to sight in, what best methods do you all use and at what distance? I was thinking 7-8 dove load at 25 yards to get the red dot on, then switch to the TSS and make adjustments. Hope to only shoot the TSS 1-2 times to get dead on.

What say y'all?

Start out close around 10 yards or less , draw a small dot on a cardboard box. Get your POA/POI then adjust your red dot accordingly. Once your POI is on move back to 20/25 yards and check your pattern. Once you are sure of yourself with your light loads then shoot your TSS at 35 yards. I usually shoot the Birchwood Casey turkey head targets that last shot with TSS. Once I get my light loads in I usually only have to shoot 1 TSS to confirm. Good luck!

Sight in at 10 with dove shells. Move back to 20-25 with cheap lead turkey loads. Once it is dialed in maybe shoot one round of TSS at 30-35
I did this, except at 40 yards for the final adjustment as Knightrider suggested. Good luck and show us your results!

Yeah 10 to 15 with target loads, put a piece bright colored duct tape about 1"x1" on 3x3' piece of construction paper. Use duct tape has POA. Shoot a load and draw 10" circle around the core and make adjustments with red dot to get it centered on the duct tape. Move out to 40 and shoot. Remember the FF3 is a 1 MOA red dot so at 40 yards you are moving it .40 inches per click. Don't want to insult anyone's intelligence. Sometimes it is easy to forget to do the math.

Just be sure of your shot. A good rest and make sure you shoot it just like a rifle. Then aim at the same point and move the sight to the center of the pattern while on a good rest. A vice works best so you dont influence the gun. I have gotten dang near dead perfect with 2 shots using this method. Although I load my TSS i had a trap that caught about 90% of my shot to reuse but its about destroyed by wind and horses so i dont shoot near as much anymore

Use a paper target about 36" x 36" so you can see majority of the pellets. I start by sighting in light load lead #9s (7/8 ounce = 512 pellets), as I want maximum pattern density so I can somewhat pick out center of pattern on paper. I'm not a fan 20G #5s/#6s etc as the pellet count is too low to see much about center of pattern at 30+ yards. Start at closer ranges to get POA=POI, then get the lead #9s hitting about 1" low at 30 yards, then put the expensive TSS shells in (typically hotter load, which likely equates to higher POI), and fine tune it at 40 yards, hopefully with 2-3 TSS shells. Set it, forget it, and save your time, money and headache going forward. My .02

Oh yeah - I'm OCD when it comes to this stuff, hence me making this post 🤣. We use Caldwell vices for rifles and shotguns - I am not satisfied if it isn't perfection.

I would like to get into reloading. They have traps to catch loads for reuse??? Wow! Never knew that existed. That's awesome - kudos!

Interesting, but makes perfect sense. So, make sure the light lead load is hitting slightly low - because the TSS is hotter and is still moving, hence will shoot higher. Thank you, sir!

A few friends and I roll our own tss loads. We all chipped in a few bucks and with what materials we had laying around, we build a tss shot trap. Tss is so hard it doesn't really deform and you can recapture and reload. 80-90%.
This really shines when testing multiple chokes. We found sound ideas online and it was a very simple design.

Shoot dove loads at close range, a lot closer than 25 yards. Try about 10 yards. TSS is slow so it will be low, but, many chokes change poa and poi with TSS. Once it's sighted in at 10 yards, move to 40. It will be low most likely, but don't be surprised if it's 2' left and low all being due to your particular choke tube. Indian creek chokes are BAD about changing impact with TSS from my experience.

All good advice. Thanks to all. Hoping my stock turkey choke holds up. Online says the provided Stoeger m3020 choke is very good. Hoping I don't have to buy a new one

I'm using the one that came in mine with handloaded TSS 9's by @REN. I moved it a little after this shot but you can see the pattern.

Here it is at 30 yards. Very pleased! Shot at 10 yards with #8 dove load. Shot twice and made an adjustment. Went out to 30 and shot another dove load. Made an adjustment and shot a #9 TSS. Needed to make one more adjustment to center the pattern. Shot one more TSS just for comfort.

You miss with that pattern and you're either blind or trying long range sniping 😂

I like it! That's a killer there. I hope you get to try it out on a couple of big ones this season! Thanks for sharing!
