Talked to my seed guy today who happens to be a pretty big seed blend deal here in the south. They do a lot for Co-op, Biologic & other buck on bag companies.

Talked about availability most & a little on price. They've got rye & use their own wheat as they grow thousands of acres each year. He said buckwheat was scarce and crazy high as most comes from South Dakota that they had terrible drought last year. Also said Landino clovers were through the roof too, other clovers not so bad.

He's doing me a mix of Triticale-Fixation Balansa Clover-Jackpot Forage Turnips- Daikan Radish for my annual plots. Had all the stuff to do it with & told him to figure the percentages and make enough for 20 acres. He did say the Jackpot turnips were actually cheaper that 7 Top right now. Will find out cost when ready.

He did say that he was going to a meeting Thurs & Friday that'll be attended by 30-40 big time seed growers from across country. Main topic is availability, not price. Everyone wanting to know what they can get their hands on & will be priced accordingly.

Called Dickson Co-op today and asked about cereal winter rye and there's still none in stock....they even checked neighboring Co-ops and couldn't find any....I asked if it would be in stock in the next two weeks.....they said possibly......was hoping to layer some rye in two of the newer plots where the pH isn't right yet....may have to rethink that plan if it doesn't come in soon.

Thanks for the update. A guy at that same co-op told me it would be early October. I kind wrote that off as he didn't know what he was talking about….but who knows these days?

I was told in Maury/Williamson that it should be this week or so.. 🤷🏽‍♂️ Who knows how true that is.

Heard today that The Hogan Seed Company in Springfield has Cereal Rye in stock. $28 per 50lb....not cheap but not as bad as it could be considering these crazy times......also, they recommend 75lb per acre stand alone with a focus on soil building and 50lb per acre when blending with barasicas.

Anyone looked for Austrian Winter Peas? Humphreys Co-op had none and had none at central warehouse either.

Checked Co-op recently and doesn't look like they will offer their normal wildlife blend this year either? Or if they do it's going to be later than normal....not sure what's going on?

As for Winter Peas....when we were looking for cereal rye we asked The Hogan Seed Company in Springfield and he said they had winter peas for $1 per pound.....and various barasicas were $3 per pound.

As I've gotten older I've learned the value of "buying local" and supporting local businesses, even if it means paying a little more. So I didn't go "seed shopping" this year. Just paid whatever the local Co-op charged. If anyone is interested, at the Humphreys County Co-op, paid $15.49 per 50 lb bag of VNS Wheat seed and $92.50 per 50 lb bag for Crimson Clover seed. Don't know what the charge will be yet for Buckwheat.
