Dad was a Ranger. He told me of several that passed out in fairly shallow cold water during training. Effects of hypothermia sneak up quickly.
Said he used to over hydrate before those exercises and use his piss to help keep him warm.

I almost wish they would stop giving these accounts, they are always introducing more things that don't make sense, at least in how they write it down. In this one, Vowell is in the blind with them, which would make the other statement suspect, where it is said the surviving individual thought it strange that Vowell was loading his SG in the boat, and not while in the blind. It also states he loaded his friends into the boat, then overpowered Vowell. A jammed SG would have explained one of the accounts where it was said he used a second SG to shoot the second victim, but here it sounds like only one SG was in play. And lastly, now they are saying he was seen on the bank, and have footprints, so dogs not used? Why search the water then?Reelfoot Shooting Deaths Remain Under Investigation

Only real fact seems we the public have is two young men were shot by someone & are dead. Sad story and I prayed for these families.

In the context of Reelfoot's interior, the word "bank" often means just more shallow water in a vast marshland. Visualize a vast marshland more than a lake, with some areas or spots of land above water being "bank".
At the time of the tragedy, the water was fast rising due to torrential rains. I doubt bloodhounds would have been of much value a couple hours later.
Via their duck boats, they were around a 15 minute boat ride from a real "bank" on the edge of this vast marshland lake. Trying to get out on foot, I believe, at best, would have taken many hours, and a bit of luck. It is very difficult to walk in muddy marsh, with thick sawgrass and brush, often in water from ankle to chest deep.

I fully expect David Vowell will be found, himself a victim of hypothermia, somewhere out in the marshy sawgrass. It may be days, weeks, or months, but he will be found.
It's also possible he more quickly drowned in deeper water, and will be found sooner.
Often, when people have drowned on Reelfoot, it has taken days to find them.
Back in 2012, a friend of mine drowned on Reelfoot while fishing. I forget how many days it took to find and recover his body. It often takes days and longer.
