If I'm shooting copper-plated lead shot, I want a 3-inch, high-velocity No. 5. If I'm shooting the tungsten-based shot I want to shoot a No. 6 or No. 7. The more velocity the better. The reason that HeviShot and the Winchester and Federal tungsten turkey loads shoot "farther" is that the shot stays above the speed of sound longer. When round shot is super sonic it flies like it has a long "tail" like a comet, which makes it more stable. As a pellet passes through the sound barrier the "tail" starts wagging like a dog's tail and causes the shot pattern to open up at that range. Shot weight and pellet energy does the penetration and bone breaking, but velocity retention leads to tighter patterns.
