I saw a Weatherby vanguard in a wood stock the other day. Very nice. If you go synthetic, I'd get the Venture

if you could find one of the tang safety rugers in a 270 thats the route i would go
i like what the others have mentioned but have no experience with the venture
losing your m70 had to be awful i feel for you man

I'm going to have to replace my stolen Winchester model 70, what brand .270 bolt action rifle would you choose in the $500 range?

winchester model 70- the control round feed version, not the cheapo push feed type. if you go up to 1000-1200 range i would go with a kimber

Excellent choice. I just bought the Savage 10 Trophy Hunter XP 243 for my daughter. It is printing some .5625 3 shot grps with only maybe 20 rounds through the barrel. One sweet gun indeed!!

Remington 700.

I'm a Remington fan myself, I have a Mdl. 700 in .270, 30-06 and 7MM mag. Even my M/L is a Mdl. 700. Also have a couple of Mdl. 7's [.260 7-08] They all shoot great but I have heard that the "newer" Remingtons are not as good as my older rifles.

Either another Model 70 or a Ruger 77.....I'm partial to the Ruger
