What rifle caliber (one gun) would you use to hunt deer up to cape buffalo, your range will be 500 yards?
Not a I would not do that question, but what caliber would you put together for this?
No, I'm not going to do this, I am interested in caliber and bullet selection.

I have used a .375 h&h in Africa and with full strength loads it'll recoil pretty hard. Think mossberg 835 3 1/2 turkey loads. It can be loaded lightly too but, I've not shot those loads.
My Sunday school class bought a 375 Ruger for our teacher moving to Alaska. I shot his deer loads and they were on par with a 30-06. Id say the full power loads will be about what the h&h is. I'd def. Pick the Ruger 375. Btw he's made some stupid long range shots on moose with this gun.

I believe Cape Buffalo carry a minimum of 375 but I could be wrong.

375 H&H for me

Reduced loads with the 200gr Sierra and sr4759 or imr4198 for deer

250 ttsx for anything but bufflers

Would you still pick the 375 H&H if there were no restrictions?

I would buy 2 rifles

I've shot the H&H a fair amount and other than for things that would kill me back I can't see me using one. The 458 Win I've shot some and it's in the same category.

For anything other than big, scary, dark and hairy I'd have something non-magnum.

I've never been to Africa but if I was going after something big as a Cape Buffalo I think I'd want at least a 416 of some kind probably a Brno 602 416 Rigby

If anyone needs a couple boxes of 375 H&H I had posted in classifieds a while back.

"Selling for a friend
2 boxes remington 375 H&H Magnum
$60 per box."

If you can afford to hunt Cape buffalo in Africa, surely you can afford two rifles. It's insane to carry a rifle that big and heavy with no possible ability to shoot any further than 100 yds for deer size game. Come on man! 😀
That's the thing though, you don't carry the rifle, the PH's trackers carry it untill it's time to shoulder it for a shot opportunity . They do all the hard leg work and you get to look good in a photo opp😜.

I understand your question.

Since you are not worried about actual laws, but what would actually work.

Hands down the 30.06 Springfield with the appropriate bullet for each.

What load for the buff, remember I'm looking at a 500 yd. shot.

All of this will help me in caliber selection.
