Sorry it didn't work out better for you, but I gave up on trying to impress amateur BBQ judges. The best que in the world won't get anyone's attention at MiM, so I put zero stock in their opinions anymore. You know what's good, and you know what's right....just keep doing it the way you know how. Those judges want sweet glazed sticks of brown sugar, and it's hard to make that taste good.

Honestly, I would get rid of the cumin. I don't like how it works in pork. I think a touch of celery seed would add a bit of a vegetal *oomph* to it. Bittersweet chocolate powder might give it some depth. Mushroom powder might work as well, but I would go lightly with it. A little bit can really help, but too much will make it funky.
We are close!
Drop the cumin, up the brown suger, exchange salt for celery salt and for depth ground ginger can be really good.
Also consider when you apply your rub! Rub and rest at least 1 hour before moving to the heat
