3/15/23: I saw four bucks yesterday and all had racks. 2 were 8s, 1 was 6, and the last was a fork. When do they fall off?
If your deer herd is very healthy, and bucks not overly stressed by the rut, you should see antlers shedding from late February into early April.3/15/23: I saw four bucks yesterday and all had racks. 2 were 8s, 1 was 6, and the last was a fork. When do they fall off?
Seriously? Do bucks really shed their antlers each year?If your deer herd is very healthy, and bucks not overly stressed by the rut, you should see antlers shedding from late February into early April.
Well, so I've been told...Seriously? Do bucks really shed their antlers each year?
For some bucks, that is exactly what happens. Growth of the new set pops the old set off from underneath.Bucks around here still holding. They always do. It's almost like they hold until new nubs push the old antlers off.
The farther north you go, the more early antler drop timing is genetically ingrained. It is actually a good survival mechanism to NOT be carrying antlers in areas that experience deep snow during winter. On my Ohio place the bigger bucks are usually all shed by February. Some begin in January. Young/small ones last until spring.

Western Ky still has a lot carrying antlers.
Saw a big 9 in Stewart county Tn today rubbing a cedar in a fence row. The only buck I can find on that farm with antlers intact. I watched him rub hoping he would shed right there. No such luck
3/18/23: I'm still seeing them with antlers on my Edge trail cam. Got three this morning. I love that camera. They were even fuming it out and still didn't knock any off.I'm still getting 50% still carrying on my lease in Central City
