What a weekend been on birds non stop. After a bad setup was able to seal the deal a few hours later in the howling winds at 1pm! Took one of 3 LBs. On fire today!

First ever spurless turkey killed opening day.
Had 9-1/2 inch beard weighed around 18 lb. There's a spot on his legs where they are supposed to be but nada! Pretty unique bird imo... Got him with my 870 20 gauge and handloads. Was a fast hunt opening morning double with my Buddy, both dead @ 6:35

The good Lord blessed me with this two year old gobbler. He had beard rot ( 4 inch beard) and a big patch of feathers missing on the back of his neck but he came in gobbling and drumming.

At Jake's Day last year, they held a drawing to raffle off a spring youth turkey hunt on our farm. I think this is the sixth time we've donated our farm for the youth turkey hunt between Jake's Day and NWTF banquets, and so far, with 100% success! I encourage you to consider doing something like this for our youth. I'm sure many of you don't have the time and/or resources, but for those who do, let's do what we can to keep today's kids from addiction to electronics, among other things. This is the first game animal this 14-year-old has ever taken, and his dad was right there with him, along with another guy videoing the hunt. He dropped this Tom (10 3/4" beard x 1 1/8" spurs) in its tracks with his .410 Saturday at 6:10 am. I'm pretty sure the thrill of the hunt is running through his veins now!

I've killed one like this before, too.

Late morning hunts can some times be the ticket. Slept in this morning due to just being tired after being up early and walking who knows how many miles over the last few days chasing turkeys. Finally dragged out of bed around 0700. After eating a biscuit and my morning coffee kicking in, I hit the door running and made it out to one of the local WMA spots not too far from the house a little before 0900. Long story short....called him in to 35 paces right at 10:00 after working him for about 30 minutes. I've hunted this area a few times over the last couple of seasons but the birds have always come out ahead in the game. This morning it just all fell into place and my first bird of the season is in the books. Overall, a decent public land bird....18 pounds, 15 ounces....just short of a 9 inch beard with spurs right at an inch.
