Guy was closing the doors on a pawn shop and made my son a deal to buy every gun he had left. I can't positively identify this rifle. I know its a sportized military rifle, but I do not know the cartridge. Its a mauser action. Im guessing it's an 8mm, 8mm loads, cycles as it should, but I wont fire it till I can confirm. Here's a few pics.

Yeah Mauser 98 of some sort with new bottom metal to accept a detachable magazine…'probably' a 8x57…military barrel with the stepped contour…see through rings probably used to raise the scope so the original safety didn't have to be altered…maybe a Belgian proof mark? on the root of the bolt…

Actually there's no way the bolt handle can clear a lower scope when fully open.

Had 1 like it in 30-06 , bolt wouldn't clear with short rings , brother killed his first deer with it, he wallowed the barrel lug out and is now junk , great shooting rifle though the safety was a pain

Another option might be a 7.65 Argentine. Any markings or crest that is covered by the rings would give a better indication of what kind of rifle is started out as. Look the barrel over good, if there is an import stamp, it should have a caliber marking, but if it is a vet bring back, there won't be an import stamp. A chamber casting is the best way to find out what it is chamber in.

Could it be a 6.5 …. Maybe?

I have one that's similar, but not customized.

Never mind… just read.

30-06 and 303 British will not cycle, chamber. 7mm mauser bullet will fall through the barrel.🤔
