I knew some "expert" would come on here and say it was not 42 pounds... It is amazing to me how someone can tell the weight of a fish from a two dimensional photo... I guess two different clamps with weight measures in them are no contest to a person on the internet looking at a photo... typical. Why do so many people have to be jerks about other peoples success... one of the problems with people on this and many outdoor sites
I quit posting weights a long time ago.
Due to dickheads.

Stripers fight to exhaustion and build up lactic acid in their muscles, like a lifter in a gym.
They have to be revived meticulously before they are released.
The two fish pictured above were held and wiggled by the tail to work the acid from their muscles, and held until they vigorously kicked from my grasp.
We were fishing a cool river (64 degrees) so I would believe they survived.
Keys to survival is to get them to the boat as quickly as possible, have the camera ready BEFORE the fish is in the boat, get the fish back in the water ASAP, and lastly, proper resuscitation before release.
I'd say that hanging them by the lower jaw for a weight is equally bad for the fish.

It took us way too long to realize this in the snook fishery in FL. I hate to think how many big fish I inadvertently killed by hanging them from a boga grip. On a good bite, this might have been more than a dozen 20lb fish, all injured or killed due to weighing them.

How does weighing them hurt them ?

You mean like this... 42 pounds... on Tuesday - Honestly if you really would like to catch big stripers, you need to fish different than most people do.... you know the routine... running up to the spill way throwing a shad and drifting or fishing cut bait under the dams when no flow.... or live skip jacks under balloons... You can catch stripers any of these ways but stripers do not get big by being caught as sadly far too many people let them go.... FWIW... we fished for 5 hours and had only 1 hook up and 1 other blow up... you have to fish for big fish or numbers but generally they do not go together
That seems to be what a lot of folks do. I am just getting started with all of this, so maybe we can figure it out.

Well Merv, I would say the first one is probably every bit of 30. Second one quite a bit smaller but hard to tell with the angle. You and Bryant do trade off trips?
You were close, 25 on the first 12+ on the smaller. Yes, the angle was bad and we didn't want to do a retake, in a hurry to get back in the water.

No trade offs. I took him and his boss out for an early morning trip for hybrids on Thursday.
It was slow until we found some ospreys banging the water.

His boss had never caught a hybrid so it was fun to get him on a few.

Chris's style/method doesn't fit well with an old guy like me so we don't do tradeoffs. I like Chris and he is always willing to share info with me so whenever he wants to go fishing with me, I try to accommodate him.

Hanging a large fish vertically by the lower jaw puts all of it weight on the ligaments that connect its head to its body. If my memory serves me well, this is called the isthmus. Damaging these ligaments is detrimental to the fish as they are the same ligaments used by suction feeders like, rockfish, snook, tarpon, bass, etc. to feed.

I'm sure not all of them die but the fish certainly isn't design to support its full weight, out of the water, by this part of its body.

I wonder how beimg dragged around by a hook in that jaw works for them.

Damn!!!!
Would a 7 wt handle it?
Clouser?
Likely. That was one of the original TFO 8 wts on a BASS PRO reel. ( finer rods & reels now) We ran them down with the motor or trolling motor to keep from stressing them out too much. Yes, and Clauser minnows on heavy sink lines. All hooked in the lip and all released alive. No trout sets!

Some nice fish! I did not realize most of the released ones died. Why is that?
I caught about a 30 pounder a few years ago and released it thinking I was doing a good deed.
Are they good fish to eat?
J hooks that are swallowed with the bait. I've seen guys with balloons let them swim for several minutes BEFORE they set the hook. Think what that hook penetrates

Mostly custom ties from a local shop but Clousers or any shad/trout imitation will work. Been a minute since I have fished for them, usually requires me being up late which I am not a fan of these days! Lol
Just a hint but either threadfin shad colors or tie it like a rainbow trout!! I tied these like a weighted Deceiver.
