Good Luck to all who go. I have no interest in a velvet hunt. I just enjoy the cool, fall mornings, smell of the fallen leaves and the sound of a buck running through the woods chasing a doe. But, I have no objection whatsoever and wish the best to all who go on the velvet antlers.

I agree on easier better meat. I really dislike antlers in velvet but the meat is better with potentially less hang/chill time. (We process our own deer)
I've killed 4 pretty good bucks in the first half of September (2 velvet) along with several does and have never had any issues with spoilage or meat quality. Sure there is some extra care that must be taken and ticks to deal with, but the better odds to shoot a mature buck easily offset those negatives for me.

I have been really surprised by the stages of velvet during these hunts. Out of the few I have handled, not one was able to be injected and most were ready to shed any day. This year I have even seen more than 1 trail cam pics that showed hard antler and velvet pealing.

The only buck I've killed in the velvet hunt was already hard horned. As soon as I touched the antlers, the velvet peeled off.

Did not see any buck today let alone a shooter but my evening stand I heard pawpaws falling so it ended up worthwhile for me...
Shock a few trees and got a quick dozen or so fruits. They may not look pretty but sure are sweet.

These guys have been in one of my food plots every morning. They would have been easy. These pics were taken yesterday and today.

Had a great weekend despite never finding anything bigger than 130in. Got to visit with Dad, build him a wheelchair ramp to access the house, lime a couple plots, spray a few, refresh salt licks, and check cameras. Sat morn was glorious at my place...63 degrees... haven't felt that since late April in MS. Never even cocked the crossbow.
