Not sure if this is a thing but I noticed that almost every time I have hit the rattle bag deer hunting, within a minute or so, squirrels will appear, hit the ground and run to a different tree. Its like a Chinese fire drill.

I've had good luck with an .177 break barrel air gun. A 13 to 15 grain pellet will go around 800 ft per second, and are quite quiet, allowing for many follow-up shots.
