Just bump up your shot size. A long poke with typical birdshot (7.5-9) will leave you with a bunch of picking and hair drug into wound channels.

I use 4s on squirrels.

I shot one with 8 shot. Once.

I'll still use a shotgun, prefer a 20 ga in early season but as soon as they settle down on hickory nuts I go back to my .22 . My 10/22 has an aftermarket composite stock that is much lighter and has a greatly improved fore grip it's pretty handy
