The one I bested but missed yesterday morning is still a high priority on my season to-do list, but I left him alone today and went to a piece of river bottom timber. Incredible hunt. Lots of roost gobbling, had one strutting in early before another gobbler ran him off. Then the offender and his comrade strutted at 70 yards for an hour with a few hens. I called at them out of frustration and was answered by a gobble RIGHT behind me. It was 7 jakes. They passed by me at 5 yards and then took off at a trot when one of the strutters' hens yelped. The jakes charged in causing enough commotion to separate the gobblers from their hens just a bit. It was just enough to get them off their strutting spot and out of sight from their hens. As soon as that happened I called and they answered. They didn't have to close much. God bless those meddling jakes.
