Do you know any deer hunters that have "pee phobia"? I was scouting with a buddy about 2 weeks before the opening of gun season one year. We were about 50 yards from his stand site and I started to let it rip. I thought he was going to have a stroke!

I tried to explain to him, but he said I was blanking crazy!

got a hunting buddy just like that. He brings this very large pee bottle that he has in his backpack. I asked him how many deer has he spooked off trying to get that dang bottle out peeing and putting it back.

I've peed In scrapes and had good results on cams, but still carry a bottle don't like putting out any scent or as little as possible while I'm hunting...

True story, waited to pee out the stand til i just couldnt hold it anymore.Got about mid stream seen a buck about 75 yards to my left , picked my gun up busted him finished peeing zipped my pants and coveralls up.Had to set back down a minute and laugh.

Don't be surprised Cullbuck if the industry comes out with a new call based on a buck hearing another buck or a doe peeing. Just a matter of time. :)

I try to see how far I can pee from my stand, especially if there is a snow on the ground. At my age that's kind of an adventure in itself!

Like this? :D

I carried a bottle as a youngster as well, simply didnt know any better. I have been using my own urine in scrapes for over 15 yrs now!

I have never carried a pee bottle. Could find one with a wide enough opening.

Seriously, many years ago, I wrote an article for D&DH and in the article, mentioned peeing out of my stand. The editor then, freaked out and cut that part completely. I remind him of it every time I see him.

I got to thinking about campfire smoke too. I guess it might still be debatable, but I never worried about it. My cousin was horrified of camp smoke getting on his clothing. He would always sit or stand well away from the fire. I remember him sitting over by the tent and all the sudden the wind changed and started blowing the smoke toward him. You would have thought there was a nuclear cloud coming his way!

Funny memories of camp hunting is fun to recall.

No peeing near my stands! Unless its during the rut and i will pee in scrapes. But still dont like to. I dont care what people say, human piss is not a natural smell in the wild!

Has to be one of the most natural in areas where there are humans. Also, I have yet to see a picture of an Indian hunter returning to camp with a deer on his shoulders and a pee bottle in his hands.

Now as to me real query. If you will pee in scrapes and pee near your stands during the rut, why not any other time? Do you think your pee smells like a rutting buck or a doe in heat just during those times? The logic just totally escapes me :)

What about farts? Does this natural effluvience spook deer? If so, why? I kknow some of mine will spook humans. I have seem run. I know they were spooked.

The deer's attitude changes during the rut and ive seen any foriegn smell tend to make them curious or angry. But like i said i dont like to. Ive also seem the go the other way. I have a buddy that kills deer all the time and pisses out of the stand. My dad smokes and pissed out of the stand all the time and kills deer. But with that said, the wind had to be right. Everytime they kill i ask them where the wind was and where the deer came from. Its a trend. But human piss can smell different depending on what they eat and drink. It has been proven that deer sometimes dont mind it, but sometimes they do. Its just one of those thing. No right or wrong answer i suppose. I guess that why we love the challenge in hunting this creature the good Lord has givin us!

You are right. The wind does have to be right. Never piss into the wind. Otherwise, if you give it some thought, it makes no difference. Either they smell and it attracts them during the rut or they can't smell it and it doesn't matter when it is.

But now farts, especially on damp, calm days, will cloud and hang just under nose level. I've seen mine make blackbirds drop like stones and have heard coons and possums puking. I don't know about deer, though?

Next time get out of his truck first.

Yep. That is how Chugwater WY got its name. That is the sound the buffler made when they hit the creek at the bottom of the bluff. True-I have found hanfulls of buffler bone chips around those bluffs.

Our camp had a running experiment for several years where half of us let er fly from the stand, and the other half used a bottle. THis was six guys in the data pool over several years.

Again, on public, mostly bowhunted, land.

Guys who were, and ARE VERY experienced killing double digit numbers of deer every year from early September through mid February, with a bow, at close range.

These are mostly old guys, who DO NOT WANT to carry pee bottles anymore.

After years of doing this, we now ALL carry pee bottles except during November rut.

I've watched many, many, MANY deer react to fresh human urine, from young deer to old deer. I've never once seen a negative reaction to human urine. The most common reaction is to sniff it and then ignore it.

And I'm now up to 9 deer that came running in while I was peeing from the stand, including older bucks.

BSK,
Me too. During NOVEMBER! Maybe even December.

But in places like AEDC, Prentice Cooper, and many other places out of State like SNF, I can't count the number of negative reactions I've witnessed.

In fact, and I will submit that the places we hunt are generally pretty thick, so seeing deer from much distance is usually uncommon, we have all been busted while in the act. I do believe that the natural curiosity of the sound of pee hitting the ground (often VERY dry leaves) from 20 plus feet might actually attract SOME curious deer. But then, the LAST thing I want while waiting for the shot, is a deer to come in LOOKING, while I have my fly open.

If I were primarily a gun hunter, I DEFINITELY would NOT worry about it.

Also, early in the bow season, when it is dry and hot, and the deer are not too spooky yet, I can get away with it. But again, the sound is still loud, and attracts attention to deer that, if I have scouted properly, would come by naturally.

On the other hand, during chasing, I don't worry about it.
