We grow potatoes in 35 gallon barrel halves. This year it is reds, they do well in that method. Below is the harvest of 2 of our little barrels.

We planted 8 this year, maybe 12 next year. Replant same for fall, they won't produce as well but who else gets new potatoes in October!!

Our banana peppers have gone crazy this year. 6 pints sliced and canned pretty quick last night.

Sadly my tomatoes have been brutally beaten up by a fungus due to all this rain. Spraying now with a copper product but seriously considering planting some more in another bed where I just harvested my candy onions.

I use a lot of straw mixed with my highly organic blended soil from my raised beds, likely 50 / 50. Drill 6 1 inch holes in the bottoms set pots on bricks and line them with landscape fabric. Layer straw and soil out seed potatoes in straw then cover with soil and the next layer of straw. When the potatoes one up, add layers as they grow and keep moist. Fertilize them lightly as they grow.
By the time the potatoes have made the straw will be decayed. Save a few seed potatoes in a cool dark place and when you dig drop in the seed and put your soil back.

Tomatoes do well in straw. Turn bale on its side and separate sections with your hand and drop in a tomato plant. You can put 2 or 3 per bale... assuming you're talking about square bales. Leave the strings on them.
