I watched a young buck several years ago giving a bird a ride like that. Pretty cool pic.

I saw it for the first time this afternoon. So crazy. It looked like it was picking bugs off of the deer.

That is exactly what it is, and why so many big game animals don't mind giving a bird a ride. It can be seen most dramatically with the big game in Africa, but I've caught birds "cleaning" deer on trail-cam video quite a few times. The deer don't seem to mind.
