Now is the time. The bucks have one thing on their mind, sex. I had this doe come up and stand by me within 20 yards. Right by her was a nice eight. I can only shoot with a bow here so I zinged him and he went down about 75 yards. He's a big body deer for TN. There was also a big spike and some does watching and hung around for awhile. He went down halfway down a steep hill. I'm 73 and I tried to drag him but the more I pulled the more he rolled down. I went and got a long rope, tied it to my ATV, and pulled him right up on my sled. Saved my life I think.

ATV winches, and several extra sets of 50-foot thin cable can be a life-saver. I have three sets of 50-foot wire rope with loops and clasps at both ends. You can string them together end-to-end and attach them to the end of your winch cable. Winch in the 50-feet of winch cable, detach a 50-foot section of wire rope, run the winch cable back out, and repeat the process. We had a big buck down in the bottom of one of our hollers that took a UTV with it's winch cable run to my ATV which it's winch cable all the way out and then three sections of 50-foot wire rope to reach the buck. Took an hour to do all that winching but dragging the buck out by hand was not going to happen.

Why is it a shot deer will always run down the steepest hill into the most inaccessible thicket?
They don't always. :D The biggest buck I ever shot went back and straight up the steepest ridge on my property, stood there looking around for a few seconds, then started walking on over the ridge about 60 yards where he fell dead.
