I've been running 3 DP traps for about 10 days and have caught 5 Coons (all boars) and 4 skunks. What is best way to get rid of skunks and keep skunk scent off of me? There's gotta be some tricks out there!
I wonder why that is? I've always taken head shots and they have all sprayed. Never thought a behind the shoulder shot being more effective. I'll try it.The best way I have found is to shoot them just behind the front shoulder. Heart/lung. Im batting around 75% of the time they don't spray. If you head shoot them you got about a 90%+ chance they spray. At least that is my experience.
Yep that's what I recommend. Head shots they spray, not sure why that is.There is no perfect way. I read about the needle technique but I think they used acetone in the version I read..
Regardless I'm not getting that close.

Been using dry cat food, raisins, and peanut m&m's. I'm kinda glad to thin out skunks too, just hate fooling with them before I go to work. A little bit of skunk scent goes a long way! What are you using for bait? I've used marshmallows for years and never caught a skunk. If you're using cat food, sardines etc your gonna catch skunks.
I use marshmallows and cat food. I personally don't mind catching one critter over another, as long as they're caught and die. I love my turkeysWhat are you using for bait? I've used marshmallows for years and never caught a skunk. If you're using cat food, sardines etc your gonna catch skunks.
I was all on board on the shooting and run for the high heavens. Then you did a U-turn on me and draped a towel over the cage…..NOPE!!!!!I've always shot n ran for the heavens!! If I catch one In a live trap I'll take a towel and drape over cage. Gently carry to pond and drop into pond. NO STINK. The important thing is to read the temperature of critter.
Yep, I've done the pond method myself - and sometimes had to drive 2 miles to get to pond. Knock on wood, never had one spray.I've always shot n ran for the heavens!! If I catch one In a live trap I'll take a towel and drape over cage. Gently carry to pond and drop into pond. NO STINK. The important thing is to read the temperature of critter.
"SO FAR" I've had 100% success using that method with cage traps.I was all on board on the shooting and run for the high heavens. Then you did a U-turn on me and draped a towel over the cage…..NOPE!!!!!
The first DP's that I set,I baited with the waste chocolate/mm's from M&M Mars. I caught 18 skunks before catching my first coon.Been using dry cat food, raisins, and peanut m&m's. Dang!! You did a lot of running. I just hate dealing with a skunk in any type of foothold trap. The first DP's that I set,I baited with the waste chocolate/mm's from M&M Mars. I caught 18 skunks before catching my first coon.
Geez. this is a terrible idea. If you they will spray when you shoot them, try and stick a thermometer up their wazoo !I've always shot n ran for the heavens!!
