Hey Brian, I'm sure it's gotten asked in the past but say you had a white oak right next to a pinoak and both were producing heavily. Which one would be the preferred acorn? I get so excited when I find a pinoak dropping because I've always had such good luck with them in the past. Is there more or less nutritional value in them?
Usually, acorn preference is based on tannin content (and I don't know the tannin content of the pin oak), but I also don't doubt for a second that deer can "smell" other features of a food source, and nutritional content may play a role.
