The bug bit me pretty hard once I realized how close I was to all of the these fish. Anyone else like to chase the bigger Stripers?
Any dedicated Striper guys here?

There are a few on here but they definitely hold their spots pretty close to the vest.

It all depends on how you'd like to fish for them. We fish for them at night from July til October on Norris and Cherokee, trolling lead line with 9" crankbait Muskie lures made by Grandma Lures. Sure, we like catching the big ones but we also like eating them all year long so we catch and keep a variety of sizes. It is bad practice to throw them back as they usually don't live. There are some monsters out there. I lost one last fall. Got it within 20 yards of the boat and it snapped 36lb test braid leadcore.

Well CliffordN you know I do. Have you had a chance to get out to some of the areas I told you about? I know with your boat you may be limited in some of the places upriver but still tons of good fishing down low and in the Cumberland.
You mean like this... 42 pounds... on Tuesday - Honestly if you really would like to catch big stripers, you need to fish different than most people do.... you know the routine... running up to the spill way throwing a shad and drifting or fishing cut bait under the dams when no flow.... or live skip jacks under balloons... You can catch stripers any of these ways but stripers do not get big by being caught as sadly far too many people let them go.... FWIW... we fished for 5 hours and had only 1 hook up and 1 other blow up... you have to fish for big fish or numbers but generally they do not go together

Years ago we did with flyrods…… a little old for that craziness now.

42inches maybe, I doubt 42lbs. Amazing how many lbs a camera will ad.
Billy has been "pushing" those big glidebaits pretty hard here recently. They, along with other methods, will produce good fish from time to time. I think he would even agree though, that nothing will out fish an 18+ in live bait, at least when it comes to catching 30+lb fish consistently

I knew some "expert" would come on here and say it was not 42 pounds... It is amazing to me how someone can tell the weight of a fish from a two dimensional photo... I guess two different clamps with weight measures in them are no contest to a person on the internet looking at a photo... typical. Why do so many people have to be jerks about other peoples success... one of the problems with people on this and many outdoor sites

Some nice fish! I did not realize most of the released ones died. Why is that?
I caught about a 30 pounder a few years ago and released it thinking I was doing a good deed.

I'm not around stripers so I don't know but was confused by this as well.

Stripers fight to exhaustion and build up lactic acid in their muscles, like a lifter in a gym.
They have to be revived meticulously before they are released.
The two fish pictured above were held and wiggled by the tail to work the acid from their muscles, and held until they vigorously kicked from my grasp.
We were fishing a cool river (64 degrees) so I would believe they survived.
Keys to survival is to get them to the boat as quickly as possible, have the camera ready BEFORE the fish is in the boat, get the fish back in the water ASAP, and lastly, proper resuscitation before release.

The waters where I fish with two generators running, no! A 7wt won't cut it. I've seen several quality 8wts snap. This is from wading, if you're in a boat where you can follow them, I'm sure it'd be different.

No group tends to exaggerate length and weight more so, than fisherman
The facial expression, or lack of should I say, tells me all I need to know about how big she wasn't, even though you appear to be a pretty big dude No doubt, a good fish though, and to fool it with a lure is quite a task. Congrats.
Mostly custom ties from a local shop but Clousers or any shad/trout imitation will work. Been a minute since I have fished for them, usually requires me being up late which I am not a fan of these days! Lol
