When Ethan turned 11, I started buying points for him in Wyoming for antelope (the earliest age you can buy points). He had 6 for this years draw, and opening day coincided with his new 2 week fall break.from high school. I asked him if he wanted to cash in on a unit with a high population density or keep building points... he was all about going this year, AND since he was 17 at the time of application, we were able to apply for a discounted youth tag even though he turned 18 2 days ago.

He drew the tag (NOT a guarantee in regular draw with 6 points for this unit) and the homework really started. I must have spent 20 hours pouring over satellite imagery, public land blocks, no hunting blocks, road accesses, BLM roads, etc...

Came up with a strategy to camp on a piece of public south of a series of draws that appeared to contain water that ran east to west until they hit a large block closed to hunting. The only other access to this spot would be from the east, which if hunted by others would just push the antelope right to us as they retreated to safety (at least that was my plan in my head). I picked out another dozen spots to check that weren't visible from roads for later in the week.

We touched down in Denver yesterday, picked up the rental, and hit the local Walmart for basic camping supplies to last is through Wednesday. Got to my camping spot, and there were at least 100 antelope visible 360 deg around from camp. Mostly does and small bucks, but we did see one bedded shortly before dark at 650y that warranted a closer look.

We heated up some soup, and tucked in sleeping bags under the stars at 9p.

I woke up at 3a ready to go but cold (33 last night, and the $20 Walmart sleeping bag wasn't quite enough). I made coffee and watched a movie until 5a. Just as the movie ended, another vehicle started to pull in off the main road toward us, but thank goodness left us alone and headed down the road another mile before pulling in. I woke Ethan up at 545 and we got dressed and ate breakfast. Just as we were about to head into our ravines, a small buck crossed 30y in front of our camp. Good omen? Certainly cool to be camped right in the middle of all these antelope!

We dropped off onto the first ravine 100y from the Jeep and set up. Saw 3 small bucks and a few does, but nothing worth shooting. The other guys a mile down the road were working toward us in that ravine, so we waited to see if they would push anything good by... but just some more small bucks and small doe groups. We decided to cross the first ravine and hit the second, paralleling the no hunting zone about a half mile away. Got to the second ravine and more does and small bucks, but we were close to where we saw the decent buck bedded so we decided to just wait a bit. A pretty good buck that warranted a closer look was working does on the next ridge up, so we moved again another half mile north to the ridge he dropped over. We crept over slowly, glassing antelope as we advanced. After looking at 7 or 8, Ethan spotted a couple does 30y away over the steep rise headed right for us. And this buck was right behind them

He was clearly the buck we saw the evening before, good for this unit, certainly not a giant tho. I was thinking upper 60s, maybe very low 70s, maybe 12.5 to 13 in. While he was at 25 yards, we discussed whether to take him, but decided he just wasn't good enough for the first hour of the first day. He herded his 15 or 16 does up and worked them around in the basin in front of us. I kept looking him over and over and over, and after 15 minutes I realized he was better than I first judged. I told Ethan if they let us sneak up the final 5y to the crest of the ridge without spooking, I think we need to take him. And they did, and Ethan did :)

200y with the 6.5WSM, perfect shot (exit wound from fragmented bullet in the pic... too much blood on the entry side)

Ended up being even better than my rejudge. Doesn't look it in the pic I took of him at 25y alive, but he is 14in and scores 74in. Pretty shaped rack, so we caped him out and took him to the taxidermist.

Gonna miss our extremely primitive camp, but we have till Friday here, so I think we are going sightseeing in Yellowstone the rest of the week. I suppose this was the 15th or so buck we saw this morn. Worked out perfectly, although we are both a little disappointed we can no longer hunt. Going to do some trout fishing on the way to Yellowstone tho!

Congrats to Ethan! That's a nice buck. Antelope hunting is so much fun. I'm probably about 3 points away from going back to the last unit I hunted (special draw). This has me wishing they had extra special points I could buy.

Awesome brother and love the adventure. I also like how you rented a rubicon Jeep truck and toss the bags on the ground to sleep. I hope the rest of y'all's trip is amazing and get to spend so good time together. I've got my boys building points as we speak and hope to be experiencing it with them in a few years.

Good deal, glad you are having great experience for both of y'all. Did same with two of grandsons were in early teens. Both tagged antelope first day so we spent next 3 in Estes Park watching & listening to elk rut. Both still talk about the elk as much as antelope hunt. Enjoy the downtime together!!

Congrats.

I just got back Sat night from my first antelope hunt. I had the best and worst time all on the same hunt. I had multiple opportunities to fill my tag, yet still came back with an empty cooler.

All I will say is those things make for a small target and I cant seem to get closer than 400 yards to them.

Awesome! Congrats to your son! We're headed to Gillette next Tuesday for 4 days. Make sure and check out Jackson Hole and the Tetons.
