Well we had a good South wind yesterday so man and I went hunting for "his" buck.
This is only the second chance we have had to hunt the area due to the wind.
Hard to explain but due to property lines and the travel routes (best I can tell) of the buck South or a VERY SLIGHT variation of SE or SW wind is all we can do.
We got set up and all was good.
Beautiful little chocolate colored racked 4 pointer came in 15 minutes after we got set up.
He hung around for a bit and as I was watching him all of a sudden he popped his head up and started sniffing big time.
About that time I felt the coolness of a nearly straight East wind on the back of my neck.
Pretty wild, he smelled us before I even felt the wind.
He eased on off at that point.
Nothing else till 6:15 p.m. when we were sitting there totally motionless with ZERO wind.
All I can figure is with no wind at all our scent just kinda sat there and started radiating around us 360 degrees.
I assume it was a doe or young buck but something started blowing its friggin head off at about 30 yards behind us.
It blew for several mintues.
I pondered the situation and figured we had just over an hour of legal light left so I did something radical.
I slowly moved to one side to expose myself and movement.
It blew again and took off.
My thinking was, it would be "better" to go ahead and get busted and the deer leave the area than to have it stand there and blow for an hour.
Might have made the wrong call, dunno.
Anyway, after that we sat till the end of light with no more action or sightings at all.
My trail cam tells me "his" buck has changed his pattern over the last few days.
Maybe he is shedding his velvet, maybe he has found a white oak that is dropping but he is only showing up before dark a couple days a week now instead of almost every day.
Now he shows up around 1 or 2 in the morning.
Still had an awesome hunt and man made great strides in getting used to his climber.
Maybe one day he will be fast as me.
Pretty fun game we are playing with the ole boy but for now, he is winning.
