Looking for a 50mm with BDC for my MLII. Where I will be hunting with this rifle my shots will avg. about 150yds up to 400 max. I don't want to spend more than $300-400. What are your suggestions fellas?
Thanks.

If your going to be shooting out to 400 yards don't be to cheap on the scope. And what kind of ML you going to be using to shoot that distance? Check out red hawk rifles they run some nice sales on Zeiss demo scopes.

zeiss 3-9x40 euro optic 299

send back to zeiss elevation knob 95 dollars

sight in at 100 measure speed through chrony

you will be good to 300 any thing over 3 will take a real good load and ability to shoot real good

Ive used a 3-9 x Burris Fullfield II for 10 years on both my 300 wsm and shooting heavy loads out of my savage. They're worked flawlessly

Unless you are spending every weekend at the range and have a SMLII dialed in at sub-MOA, I wouldn't remotely consider a 400 yd shot to be ethical. My personal opinion is that 300 yds is really pushing the upper limits in a hunting situation. Yeah, it bites watching some of those big IL deer come out a half county away in some of those fields, but on anything less than a shooting bench with bags, I can't see an ethical shot at those ranges. Sometimes the deer win.

I have both a Leupold VX3 50mm and a Zeiss Conquest on mine, and really like both.

Thanks Steve. I appreciate your feedback. You know exactly what I wanted this gun for. I didn't know this gun wasn't effective at 400 yards. Most shots would be closer than 200. I don't shoot as often as some, but I would be proficient before I ever squeezed the trigger. Yes, in IL they win often, lol! Thanks for the scope suggestions too. Maybe I need to take my Monarch off my Remington, :)

The problem really isn't the rifle. It likely would have enough foot pounds of energy to ethically kill at 400 yds, especially with some of the 300 gr. bullets. But, if you have looked at the ballistics tables, the drop at that range gets into the feet area, rather than inches. Even with some of the tripod type shooting rests, IMO it would be an iffy shot, even with the ballistics plex at 400 yds. There are a couple of folks on here that shoot enough and bust enough milk jugs at that range to make it doable. You may be in that category as well. I know I'm not. I've killed a couple up there around 200 yds shooting off the sticks. But, that is pretty much my comfort level. I've let more than one walk at 300 yds. because I know I don't shoot enough to ethically pull the trigger.

But, I sure do feel more confident when I haul a Savage MLII out to one of those fields than the other options out there.

I have better glass on my Savages than I do on my cartridge rifles because I use them more. I have a Nikon M that is a great scope on my .270. Yours would be great on your Savage as well. Good luck!

300 yards is a hell of a long way in a hunting situation, most people don't put in the trigger time to be proficient at 200.

You're right, but I'm not that guy.

If you possess that skill set, I would suggest rebarreling your Savage with a quality .45 barrel so you can use a high BC bullet like a 275 or 300 grain Parker Match Hunter. The problem with the .50 past 300 is crappy BC bullet selection. If you can shoot like you're saying, it would be worth the time and money. You could run them sabot less and take out the weak link. I guess you could shoot them saboted, but I'd want to go without them.

Season before last, I shot a deer at 287 yards with my Pacnor 45 barreled Savage. 250 TEZ at 2777 MV zeroed at 120 yards has 45 inches of drop at 400 yards with retained velocity of 1278 fps and retained energy of 907 ft-lb. That makes 400 yards the limit for that particular load. Of course, a match hunter or other high BC 45 projectile will increase the effective range beyond 400 yards. In a 50cal, the same TEZ bullet will only reach into the 2500 fps MV range and would likely be limited to 300 yards. For 400 yard shots, I would have to have 1.5" or less groups at 200 yards before I would attempt it. It is a long poke in a hunting situation.

My self imposed ethical range limit is 400 yards with any gun capable of it. A good rest is needed also. With the above mentioned 250 TEZ load, my Redfield Revolution 4-12x50 with BDC has proper hold overs for 200, 300, and 400 yards. They are an awesome deal for the money (250.00). I have 7 of them and have never had an ounce of trouble.
