Where did I go wrong? The scope won't fit in the mounts, it hits either the bell or the eye piece. Nightforce rings.

And this is why I use a pic rail on everything. You might see if you can get an extended rear mount as well.

Your probably going to need a one piece rail as long as that action is. . I personally like to use two piece because I think they are stronger whenever possible plus it makes loading into the action easier. You may be able to get some Offset Cantilever Picatinny rings that work as well. That Set up is clearly NOT going to work.
Would I be better to get a new base or new rings? I'm showing my ignorance but would a 1 piece base bridge the action allowing to move the rings closer?

You have good rings. I would just a good base. Don't skimp. Get a good one.
Seekins has been my go to for rails. As stated, don't skimp.
100% use a pic rail. Will give you the flexibility you need for proper eye relief. Just make sure that if your rings have picatinny lugs that you don't buy a weaver rail or the rings may not fit in the slots.
Looks like you might be able to turn them both around and get the clearance you need?
Tried that but they are centered.
You mean they are offset to one side? And aren't centered with the barrel if turned?
No I mean the lug on the bottom is centered so when I turn them around I don't gain or loose anything.
The Seekins base I found for my gun was "discontinued". I went with Nightforce but I couldn't find a flat one for my gun so I ordered the 20 MOA. I shouldn't have a problem with zero at 100 yards should I?
