if deer was the biggest target and 400 was the farthest shot,,

my 25-06 shoots the 110 NAB fast enough that I can zero at 275 and be 10 inches low at 400.

my 300 RUM shoots the 180 Sierra GK fast enough to zero at 300 and be 8 inches low at 400 and 18 low at 500,

I am sure a Rem 700 SPS 270 and a 300$$ scope could get you consistant hits at 400 yards for 8-900$$

I would go with a nice remington varmint in 308. ammo is easy to get or reload urself.

as far as shooting. I shoot with SNIPER7MM and we shoot off a bench and also the ground from bipod.
