It does resemble a young red deer hind...ear color similar...nose similar...dark forehead....but most similar is the neck/cape hair is different in color from the main body hair color.....the deer in top picture does appear to be younger and it may be a different time of year. But either way....doesn't appear to be a whitetail.
The flared hair on the body and lack of white around the face and neck make it look like something other than a whitetail. But, It's a whitetail. It has the tail of a whitetail -- just tucked so it's not showing well. It has tarsal glands -- elk doesn't have them. In addition look at the inside of the ears -- lined white on the top part, like a whitetail.
I talked to my dad about the deer this evening. He said it's last years fawn and has always looked that way, even the face. It traveled with its mom last year but has been a complete loner this year. However, when it comes to my dads corn other deer show up as well and they mingle together……who knows.
I can tell you for certain my dad, Slim, knows all of "his" deer by name and characteristics lol.
