Something wrong with this deer or just odd coloration?

This fella just looks odd, maybe just coloration, but seems off to me.

Tufted fur is my guess. Once it lays back flat and straight it'll look normal. It's like the lines on a carpet after vacuuming. One line will lay flat and shiny. Another line will have lifted strands that make it look dark.

Agree on wet. It I have killed 2 deer from different states that had a mane and it was darker colored like that. Taxidermist said he sees them occasionally. Very neat looking on mount.
