Interesting new research on prescribed burns

Farmers will pay our fire department so much an acre to burn their crp ground off in the spring before it starts to green up. Iowa requires land owners with crp ground to either burn, mow, or spray it and only between February 1st through April 15th. Not sure how often, but we'll burn several hundred acres each spring. You'd be surprised the conditions you can burn in if you start with back burns and know what you're doing. We have a couple side by sides with water on them to get around with along with a couple grass trucks.

Burning relatively level grasslands, and burning steep, tall hillsides are two very different things!
