They make some stuff to repair trees like that. Seems like it's some type of "tape" natural thing to repair wounds. Several big apple farms and things use them. But I can not think of what ifs called.
At the very least. I would put a tree tube around it attached to a tpost cage does best. But I've found out they don't like the tpost being there.

When I plant trees I've had to cage them to keep the deer off. Even had a buck strip a leyland cypress down to nothing.
