How hard is it to draw an Iowa tag???

One tag every 4-5 years. Bowhunting
Is the process such that you throw significant money at it buying points and what not?

Believe a point is 50-60 bucks. I have 3 right now...
Again forgive my ignorance, but how many points before you start liking your chances? Can you only buy 1 point a year?

With point creep im not sure. i would guess 5-6 for the southern zones.

Yeah, wait several years buying points and then pay $800 for a deer tag. Not worth it IMO.
If wanting to hunt the rut, bow tag, I would simply buy points until year 4. Then try to draw in year 4, but prepare to have to wait until year 5. This is based off hunting Zone 5. Other zones are less desirable and have less applications.
Late Muzzleloader tag is usually 2 years, but wherever your going better have a guaranteed food source.
I remember when 2 years would get a bow tag (around $300ish), much more pressure now. I'm able to hunt two heavily managed private farms fortunately. I'd pay $1000 every year if I could draw.
It's something I'd recommend at least once. It could be considered expensive if you had to figure total tag fees and outfitter price as well.

About 7 or 8 years ago I got drawn 2 years in a row. First for muzzleloader and second year for shotgun. The guy's farms I hunted on had guys that drew every year

I oscillate between this viewpoint and saying "but man it's IOWA" I think I'm setting my sights on Illinois first though….

I think you have to have proof of residency in the state for a certain amount of time to get a resident tag but I think you still have to draw if I remember correctly ( had a resident of Iowa I worked with a few years back)
Well that would suck. Owning a farm you arent allowed to hunt. I am considering buying a small piece out of state as an investment. Most of my focus is in southern illinois

The ENT doc on Midwest Whitetails had 3 tags...landowner, suburb, and ml/rifle.

I've hunted zone 4 archery in 2009, 2012, 2016, and was drawn this year. But, we didn't apply last year. Just bought a point.
Depending on the zone, you can draw an archery tag every year. But as mentioned earlier, expect about every 4th year for zone 4&5.

I think Illinois NR landowners can buy a tag, but not Iowa.

I drew Iowa this year, late muzzleloader with 2 points. Zone 4. Heading up between Christmas & new years on an outfitted hunt.
Unlike TN, many states publish this information. Something I wish TN would be more transparent with.

Late ML one of easiest tags to draw in Iowa & also one of most overlooked. IF you have a place with ample late season food & get cold weather it can almost be a slam dunk. But if the neighbors have the food & you don't, your looking at a tough hunt.

Ok, I'm confused by the public draw data now. It states 165 people with 5 or more points drew the zone 5 tag that had 560 available permits, thats 100% chances of drawing a tag when you consider 395 people with 4 points drew that tag.
With approximately 1500 people applying for 560 tags and they utilize a preference point system, vs a bonus point, that tells me you have 100% success with 5 points or more.
Did you apply in a party?
Simple draw odds state that if you subtract the 165 with 5 or more points from the 1495 total applicants that leaves 1330 applicants left with 4 or less points.
Assuming all 1330 had 4 points and competed for the remaining 395 tags, that's a 29.6% chance of drawing. Those with 5+ points that applied in 2021 were guaranteed a tag in zone 5, that's according to the available draw data and my TN math, of course.
