Can you re-freeze frozen hamburgers?

My next door neighbor was going to do a cook out yesterday but couldn't and she asked me if she can re-freeze the frozen hamburgers she bought Friday. She de-frozed them in the ref Friday night though today. They look great to me but I wasn't sure if she could re-freeze them.

I've always been told never to re-freeze any red meat that has been thawed. When it's thawed, go ahead and cook it and then freeze it. If it thawed in the frig and stayed in the frig, may be ok a day or two.

I read some where that you could refreeze meat IF it was thawed out in a refrigerator. IF it was left at room temp to thaw to not refreeze because the temp of the meat would rise above 40 degrees and that is when the bacteria will start to grow.

I think so as long as it didn't get above 40 degrees for an extended period.

I have no problem with re-freezing. The way I see it some food companies buy frozen raw beef, thaw, process, cook, package it and then re-freeze it as they turn it into the product they are marketing.
