1 Doe here.. I saw several bucks, but no shooters!! I hope everyone had a good year, already looking forward to next year!! However, the wife isn't!! LOL

I killed my doe the second week of the season. I seen several small bucks and a few good ones. Looking back i should have shot one. Oh well they will be there next year.

I took 3 out of there this year. Had a few encounters with some good bucks that I should have taken but oh well, there's always next year!

On the Fort, are they calling any buck with visible antler growth a Mature Buck?

So as to classify bucks on the kill sheets like a yearling with 4 inch long spikes, a "mature deer" ? Had a guy read the sheets last week of season and he told me about it. Been several years since I been able to get out there. What the heck is goin on out there? Or did he read some thing wrong?

Here we go!!! :pop:

PS: I kilt a bunch, lol.

There's a lot of does left on the fort, in some of the areas. But some of areas you can't even find a doe track. Last two years the hunting has went down hill in my opinion. I know several guys who haven't been able to kill a doe since they started earn a buck. If they keep earn a buck in effect next year also, the deer population will take a hurting even bigger then it already has. Just my two sense and what I've noticed.

I've hunt the fort a lot in the past but since the earn a buck program I haven't been. Just to time consuming and too much money traveling out there without being able to shoot a good buck if it comes by me first. Anyone heard when this might end?

Talk is this is the last "Earn a buck" year. Next year will be back to normal but I don't have hard facts on that. I was out in area 10 today and they haven't been logging it at all. They have been cutting all the small tree(1" to 5" in diameter) and leaving them where they fall. You can see a couple 100 yards or farther but can NOT walk thru it. What a mess!!! It wasn't the whole area just certain parts of area 10. I guess they may not be done yet so it could be the whole area by the time they finish. Deer were every where!!! I NOT questioning anyone's hunting abilities but I don't see how you can go the whole season and not kill one doe. Well unless you can only go several times out of the year, I would understand that but if you have been out there 4 or 5 weekends.?.?.

Thinks for the info. And yes I'm fairly confident I can kill a doe. But I hunt with a bow as much as possible as well. And I have been there when the rut was in full swing and see several bucks cruising and coming by without does. I just don't want it to be the case to go have a great buck come by and not be able to shoot and have the pressure of killing a doe first. And lastly, yes if I get to go two weekends a year I'm doing good. Most of the time just one weekend. So no you don't have to question hunting abilities of others without the whole story.

When all you can get is 49 50 51 it's hard to kill a doe.

I agree, areas like that are hunted every single day the fort is open. Fortunately I was able to find my doe in 51. By the time us civilians get to call at 1030, all areas are pretty much gone and its slim picking. Not all of us are fortunate to know a active duty solider, or a retiree who can hold them a slot and clock themselves into it later on when their able to call. I'll continue to hunt the fort regardless of the area I get. Because I enjoy it out there.

What if it never ends and the biologist there just allows the place to become yet another Unit L WASTELAND like some of the other state forest areas and wmas? I could see this happening. When I referred to laying some does down, it seems to me they're (not their) are all concentrated around the hunting and fishing unit and the horse fields (or they were 5 yrs ago). Maybe the biologist needs travel a little further than 1/2mile from his cozy office before making such a blanket edict.

Do you know the biologist's plan or what he has done? Hear say doesn't count. I have heard at least 3 different things that folks are saying the biologist plans on accomplishing and all of it was second hand or the biologist told them to their face(yeah right). I do know most of the complainers are upset because: they are not seeing high numbers of deer, they have to pass on bucks until until they can kill a doe, and the biologist is an idiot for messing their hunting up. lol, who is right? I have no clue. Show me something in writing please. Until then I will just keep hunting, killing does and hopefully at least take a decent buck or better like I do almost every year. There are still a lot of deer on the Fort. Heavy hunting pressure on the Does makes them harder to hunt. No pressure on them now, you will see them every where. I see them every time I am out there squirrel hunting. Go out there now scouting and you will see them too. Well some of you may not because the EAB has wiped them all out. lol... SMH

I didn't have any issues this last season I killed 12 deer so the earn a buck program was ok for me. The numbers of doe to me were no issue, I do think that the 48-52 areas are really slim pickens.
