If you hate fishing with treble hooks (I do), use some pliers to cut the front two hooks off. This may also help prevent or lessen hangups.

You could also take the treble hooks off and use circle hooks. That's what a friend of mine in Florida does. He says fish don't swallow the hook, and for the most part, they're easy to unhook.

To make a barbless hook, simply mash the barb of the hook with a set of pliers. This makes the fish easier to unhook when you catch it. Some places allow only single barbless hooks on lures. When fishing for trout last week, a few fish had already spit the lure out when I landed it in the net. That saved me from having to get the hook out, all I had to do was grab it and toss it back in the water.
