Anyone have experience with dwarf corn. I planted some this past May and I am a little surprised at how tall it has grown. It is almost 6 ft tall already, at V5. I have used Dekalb corn in the past with great results but it grows to 8ft+ and subsequently the deer are able to move through it without me being able to see them. I just see the stalks shake and can hear them biting the cobs. I thought switching to the dwarf corn would allow the benefits of having corn but allow a little more visibility to see which deer are in the field. I'll be curious to see how many cobs per plant the dwarf corn will produce, on the Dekalb I would get 2-4 per plant.

If you are getting 2-4 ears per plant I would love to see a picture of the plants.

I have never seen ears on any corn planted in May. You are looking at basically negative 60 days.

I am located at exit 60 Interstate 40 and have never seen deer eat corn in a corn field until the corn was fully mature and moisture level low.

I started deer hunting in the mid 1960's.

I m in southern Fayette. Grew up on a farm in SW Wisconsin and 105 day corn was pushing it. I hear what you are saying about May being late but I have done ok with early May plantings using the Dekalb variety. I narrowed up my rows this year to squeeze in a few more, went from 38 to 30 inch spacing.

Nice looking plots.....not trying to go off topic but is the fence pictured a ribbon or rope type? We've got a couple of plots were considering using the same three strand fence method next year....just looking for the most cost effective method.

You can source most of the components from Zareba. I picked up the DC charger from TSC along with the ribbon. I use t post on the corners so i can tighten the strands. I use the plastic step in stakes in between the t post. Works great for keeping out the deer on my beams.

I was looking at all of that at TSC in Franklin yesterday. Any idea how much it would cost to block off an acre?

Your charger will be the most expensive piece. I think i spent around 300 for charger, ribbon, and stakes. I use a long piece of rebar for my grounding rod. I enclose a long rectanglurish soybean plot.

Thanks.... appreciate the information.......and beans and peas is exactly what I'd like to fence off....or atleast a portion of them.
