Best Muzzleloader?

I am currently looking to get a muzzleloader for deer season and i have never fired or bought one and I was wondering which brand would provide the best bang for my buck(pun intended)

try and find a good used knight. they can be had usually at around $150 at the most. if its not 209 you can buy the conversion kit for 50 bucks.
I used a knight for years and now have a tc encore. the encores are pricey but i love mine.

with a 10+ yr. old eclipse hunter(the cheap one) and an optima in the family,i would not hesitate to buy another CVA.
BTW i shoot an old t/c thunderhawk.


and CVA's customer service is 2nd to none. not saying the others aren't good too. just no experience with their customer service.

all i have ever owned is cva,i have killed deer with others but been shooting them since the early 80's & have never seen 1 blown in person.i have seen rifles of all kinds blown to peices on the web & until i have a failure or see 1 in person & know it was loaded correctly i will have complete faith in mine,load em up & show me 1 that will outshoot which 1,randy wakemans is a joke as far as im concerned.ask him who won the lawsuit with cva,see what he sez,mike243

CVA makes a good ML for he money. I have had 2 CVA's and they both shot very well. Now have a TC Encore and like it so much more. I wouldn't feel undergunned with either as they both get the job done.

CVA barrels today are made from the same stock they use on their centerfire barrels. 416 stainless steel and i forget what the blued barrels are. They are high quality smokeless centerfire steel though.

Trash talkers on the CVA's are often just jealous due to the fact CVA's offer a 1" group or your money back guarantee while their tc,knight, savage offer no kind of guarantee.

I have a knight and a CVA wolf,And I have simply fell in love with the wolf.Don"t get me wrong the knight has taken many deer at modest distances.
But I just like the break down action and the feel of the wolf,I will prob. hunt with the wolf this year,with the shockwave and light load.

i had a knight .50 this past season but i had a wind river magnum .50 and a mountain stalker .50 that i still have the mountain stalker tho. and they are all awsome guns but i really loved the wind river magnum untill i sold it to get a my first car with the money

If u can afford one- savage smokeless. It is in a different league- no smoke, no cleaning and about 500 extra fps, along with the best trigger going. They are butt ugly and heavy- but they shoot and don't clean. They are worth the extra money- IMO.

If you are looking for speed a stock .50 Savage will do 2,700+ with 250's.

If you are a speed freak, a Pac-Nor .40 barrel screwed on that same action will go 3,100+ with 195's.

Yep. Savages are fast and since they use smokless powder the ignition is fast and no smoke. Did I mention u don't have to clean them

you still have to clean them. I learned the hard way with my marlin 30-30 336 when i didnt clean it for 3 years and ended up with rust and light pitting in the bore.

Well, most on here don't have a clue about muzzleloading in general- let alone smokeless muzzleloaders....

(and most every Savage shooter HERE does not know how to BUILD a load. They just take book loads, or rely on what is posted on the web.)

I want to know more on the specs on your Pacnor barrel on the Savage. What twist, length, groove, caliber? I'd like to have a Savage and see all the good stuff mentioned on Doug's Board.

I clean my savage after every season. No rust and it shoots great. Just got to shoot a very non corrosive smokless powder. I hate muzzleloaders, but u gotta have one so I got a savage and have been very pleased.
