Best Muzzleloader?

Mine is built on a standard Savage 10ml2 action with the following specs:

- .40 Pac-Nor barrel
- 25" stainless steel barrel
- 11 degree target crown
- .40 caliber 16 twist; 6 groove barrel
- fluted (6 flutes)
- bread blasted (action and barrel by my gunsmith)
- chambered for a stock savage breechplug
- .300" Callahan recoil lug
- glass and pillar bedded
- 2.5# trigger

I shoot .40 bare bullets (no sabot) knurled to .401-.402. Currently, these are the 195 gr Barnes and the 200 gr Hornady SST. These are shot with powders in the range of Varget to RL-17/H4350. As a side-note: I would have built this in 7mm if scn would relax TN's minimum bore size. hint, hint :)

Very nice. My gunsmith builds smokeless muzzleloaders on modified mauser 98 actions and uses smokeless powder

several reasons. you have to carry to many accessories with you- primers, powder, sabots and bullets. they are also bulky and heavy typically. i like lightweight centerfires. just load and hunt. plus, while some of these muzzleloaders shoot great- they will never have the range and long distance accuracy of a quality centerfire round. But, they are more efficient than a bow and the season falls at a great time, so i am in.

Muzzleloaders are a primitive weapon, your goal is to work at being quiet and getting closer to the animal you hunt, its all part of the huge adrenaline rush.

I carry 3 speed loaders with my bullets in my pocket. Much lighter than the 500 round of ammo center fire hunters strap over their shoulder and still come home empty handed because that 900 yard shot was way past their ability.

I can appreciate this sentiment and your state regulations may encourage this thought.

However, I don't believe there is anything primitive about most of today's muzzleloaders.

inline or flintlock, it still loads from the muzzle and shoots a projectile. Conicals in my case as thats all thats legal in Colorado, of course round balls as well.

flintlocks would be considered modern to the guy shooting a match lock.

i usually dont carry 500 rounds and rarely shoot past 850.

"Most" is the keyword...still some of us left though that don't shoot these modern in-lines. ;)

Best? Bad Bull but those are pricy. Savage ML-II is the choice for the working mans salary.
